Sometimes I just drive by yard sales and look. I can’t really explain it, sometimes I have absolutely no desire to stop and other times something reaches out and grabs me. I rarely walk away with what grabbed my attention. Today was no different. I wasn’t going to stop and then I saw these two stools that would be the perfect project. After quickly looking them over and deciding that they were more than I wanted to pay and so I passed them up. I should have just kept walking but then ugly caught my eye.
Yup ugly for sure. I don’t know if it’s the challenge of make something less ugly or just my stubborn streak, but I had to have it. Without much of a plan, I loaded it into the back of the car and went on my way.
Once getting it home a had a pretty good idea what I wanted to do. It was very dirty and had clearly come from a smoke filled home. I scrubbed it with soap and water before sanding it down.
I had a few different colors I wanted to try but landed on this dark gray. I used my new favorite spray paint. Velspar Paint and Primer in one. Finally a paint that takes only one coat.
I have always wanted to try and do a piece of furniture with a painted design and this seemed like the perfect piece to experiment with.
Using blue painting tape I created some zigzag lines.
Using some lighter gray paint and cream paint, I painted in between the tape.
When I removed the tape it was clear just how terrible I am at making straight lines. So out came the sander to try and cover up some of the mistakes and crooked lines.
I love getting rid of the ugly. 🙂
Lord it’s in your hands!
